Concert Review: Fluffin' the Oldies with Dane Stauffer and George Maurer at Crooners Supper Club

Dane Stauffer, with George Maurer on piano, at Crooners Supper Club on August 30, 2019.

Last Friday my wife and I went to Crooners Supper Club for the first time. We had a delightful time, and the show we saw, “Fluffin’ the Oldies” with Dane Stauffer and George Maurer, was a lot of fun. We’re both big fans of Dane Stauffer’s, as we’ve seen him many times in the History Theatre’s production of Glensheen. (I reviewed Glensheen here.) My wife and I find a lot of humor in one of Dane’s repeated lines in Glensheen, “Marge loves horses!” We find so much humor in it that my wife made us t-shirts that say, “Marge loves horses!” on the front.

Stauffer is an extremely engaging entertainer, brimming with enthusiasm and good humor. He was accompanied by the very talented George Maurer on piano. Stauffer started the show with the Johnny Rivers classic “Secret Agent Man,” followed by a clever medley of “Downtown” and “Love is All Around,” the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Other highlights of the show included version of Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” the Carpenters’ “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” and Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” Maurer got his own chance to shine during an inventive medley of classic rock songs with tunes like the Sesame Street theme and Vince Guaraldi’s “Linus and Lucy.”

“Fluffin’ the Oldies” was a very fun show to attend, and hopefully Stauffer and Maurer will continue to pair together for more shows like this.
